The Postage Stamp Rug Mistake
Interior designers have a nickname for a small 4x6 ft rug placed stranded in the middle of a living room with nothing touching it: The Postage Stamp. A tiny rug shrinks your living room visually, making expensive furniture look disconnected.
The 3 Leg Rules:
- All Legs on the Rug (Best for Large Rooms): Sofas, armchairs, and side tables all sit entirely on the rug. Requires an 9x12 ft or 10x14 ft rug. Creates a grand, cohesive island.
- Front Legs on the Rug (The Most Popular & Versatile): The front two legs of the sofa and armchairs rest on the rug (extending 6 to 10 inches under), while rear legs stay on bare flooring. Typically an 8x10 ft rug.
- All Legs Off (Only for Compact Nooks): Only the coffee table sits on the rug. The rug should sit within 6 inches of the sofa front legs. Rarely recommended for open living halls.
Dining Room Rug Clearance:
A dining rug MUST extend at least 24 inches (60 cm) beyond the table perimeter on all sides. When guests pull out their chairs to sit or stand, the back legs must not catch on the rug edge.
Sizing Rule: Always measure the footprint of your seating grouping and add 12 to 18 inches of perimeter before ordering a custom rug.
